Is Immigration Endangering The British Culture?

Thinking about British culture, most people will probably have visions of pubs, football, jacket potatoes and baked beans. It might not be an entirely wrong assumption. According to the book, 1 227 QI Facts, Britons eat 97% of the world's baked beans. There is however more to the British culture than baked beans and pubs.

Britain has a rich culture of architecture, literature, theatre, cinema and history. The British also love animals and it has been joked that the queen is only really happy when she is around her horses and corgis.

Until 1948 immigration was slow, but after World War Two Britain couldn't find enough people from European countries to assist them with rebuilding a war-torn Britain. The day marked as the beginning of mass immigration to the UK is believe to be 22 June 1948 when the Empire Windrush docked in London delivering hundreds of West Indian men.

Make Shakespeare Fun

Teaching Shakespeare can be a daunting task. Even the modern versions of Shakespeare's popular plays cannot always get the students excited. I have used this lesson plan with various grades and year groups. It was mainly designed for older students, but can easily be adapted for younger ones.


LEVEL: Intermediate (Can be adapted to be easier)

TIME: Five Hours (can be spread out over several lessons)

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: Any Shakespeare text and some knowledge of the history of the time

SKILLS TAUGHT: Creativity, problem solving, team work, apply prior knowledge

GOAL: Students to create a newspaper with factual information from the Elizabethan Times.

RESOURCES: Any Shakespeare text, text books and other books with information about the history of the time. The film "Shakespeare in Love" is historically very correct and gives a quick insight into the habits of the times, clothes, dances and theater practices. It is, however, not suitable for young students, unless you can edit it.

How to Analyse a Character in a Play

Characters in a play are either arched (rounded) or stereotyped. Information about who a character is can be given by the author in the list of characters, but most of the information can be found in the dialogue of the character and that of the other characters.

Realistic plays usually have rounded characters whereas absurd, epic and Commedia dell Arte mostly have stereotyped characters.

A rounded character can be analysed in depth while with a stereotype character you will focus on one or two typical characteristics and explore that in detail.

To be able to portray the character truthfully on stage, it is important to first analyse and understand the character.
